SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR

Andrea Figus

Full Professor of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Università degli Studi di Cagliari Head of Plastic Surgery & Microsurgery Unit, A.O.U. di Cagliari

The scientific rationale behind this upcoming CME course lies in the growing need for interdisciplinary collaboration and up-to-date knowledge in the fields of reconstructive, functional, and aesthetic surgery, particularly in relation to the complex anatomical and functional regions of the head and neck, skin cancer management, breast reconstruction, and limb surgery. Modern surgical practice increasingly requires a comprehensive approach that integrates oncological radicality with the highest standards of reconstructive and aesthetic outcomes. In the management of head and neck tumors, the challenges posed by both the oncological burden and the delicate functional and aesthetic structures demand a meticulous surgical strategy. The course will explore innovative reconstructive techniques that aim not only to restore anatomical continuity but also to preserve speech, swallowing, and facial expressiveness. Similarly, in the treatment of skin cancers, particularly in high-risk or aesthetically sensitive areas, the synergy between dermatological diagnosis, oncological control, and plastic surgical reconstruction is essential to ensure both curative intent and patient quality of life. Breast reconstruction, whether autologous or implant-based, remains a cornerstone of post-oncological care and an area of constant evolution. The course will offer an
in-depth analysis of current trends, surgical planning, and the management of complications, reflecting the shift toward more personalized and integrated therapeutic pathways. Aesthetic breast surgery, while distinct in its goals, shares common techniques and principles with reconstructive procedures and will be discussed within the broader context of surgical harmony and patient-centered outcomes. The program also addresses upper and lower limb surgery, with a focus on functional reconstruction following trauma, tumor resection, or congenital anomalies. These procedures often involve a delicate balance between biomechanics, tissue viability, and aesthetic restoration, and represent a crucial field in both reconstructive and reparative surgery. What sets this course apart is the outstanding quality of its faculty, composed of leading Italian experts with extensive clinical and academic experience, as well as internationally renowned guest speakers who will bring a global perspective to the discussions. Their contributions will ensure a high-level scientific exchange, enriching the participants’ understanding of current best practices and future directions in surgery. By fostering dialogue among different specialties and offering a platform for the presentation of cutting-edge techniques, this CME course aims to enhance the clinical skills of participants and promote a multidisciplinary culture in the management of complex surgical cases. The setting of Cagliari, with its vibrant scientific and cultural environment, further contributes to the value of this initiative, making it not only an educational event but also an opportunity for professional networking and growth.
